The CESA 3 Construction Academy | Lafayette County provides students with an incredible opportunity for relevant instruction. Either one-year or two-year youth apprentices are eligible to participate.
CESA 3, in affiliation with the Destinations Career Academy of Wisconsin and Southwest Wisconsin Technical College, provides students with up to six courses that allow students to explore construction skills in a hands-on learning environment.
Upon successful completion, students earn:
- OSHA 10 card
- OSHA 30 card
- CDL Preparation toward DMV/DOT exam
- 9 college credits
- Real world experience through youth apprenticeship
1st Year Offerings
1st semester - DCA Basic Equipment Fundamentals
Introduces students to heavy equipment used in the construction industry. Students will also be instructed on basic safety, maintenance, and communication methods that operating engineers may be exposed to.
2nd semester - Southwest Wisconsin Technical College Introduction to Building Trades
Introduces the student to the fundamental building materials and methods of residential construction. Students will practice safe operation of hand tools and power tools. Various typed of joining methods and general shop safety practices will be covered. Students will apply building trades skills by completing a small woodworking project. Students will also earn their OSHA 10 card.
2nd Year Offerings
1st semester - DCA Mobile Equipment Maintenance
Instructs students in the basics of maintenance of heavy equipment. Students will learn about engines hydraulic systems, powertrain systems, lubricants, and electrical systems. Students will also be taught preventative maintenance, how to use parts and technical manuals, shop safety, and tools.
2nd semester - DCA CDL Prep
Instructs students in the basics of heavy equipment operation licensure requirements followed by professional skill building and employment readiness. Note: This course does not provide the behind-the-wheel instruction nor completion of the Commercial Driver's License exam. The exam must be scheduled at a local DMV.
Attendance
The Academy meets only once a week, so it is very important that students attend each and every week. Please let your instructor know if you will be arriving late or will be absent.
Academic Progress
In order to comply with the Academy's satisfactory academic progress (SAP), the student must:
- Attend at least 80% of all scheduled classes.
- Complete all class assignments.
- Complete his/her youth apprenticeship program within the maximum time allowed (at least 450 hours of employment from June 1 - the following August 31 for a one-year student or 900 hours of the next August 31 for a two-year student).
- Successfully pass/complete all written and performance examinations.
Grading System
The Academy's curricula are formatted by Destinations Career Academy of Wisconsin and Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. Each class includes written exams and some include performance objectives. Students must achieve an accuracy of at least 70% for the written exams and performance objectives in order to successfully complete the classes. The Southwest Tech courses are graded only on a pass/fail basis and there is no letter grade awarded.
