Scripps National Spelling Bee
The Scripps National Spelling Bee is an educational promotion sponsored by the E.W. Scripps Company in conjunction with sponsoring newspapers and organizations around the world. Its purpose is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.
The program is open to students attending public, private, parochial, charter, and home schools. Please keep in mind that all school districts, parochial and charter schools, and home school students must be enrolled with Scripps at (www.spellingbee.com) to be eligible to participate. An enrollment fee will be charged, this fee includes study words for students, pronouncer guides, rules, certificates, and more.
The 31 member school districts of CESA 3 conduct their individual (school) bee, the two winners of their school bee then advance to the CESA 3 Regional Spelling Bee. The CESA 3 Regional Spelling Bee is held at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in Fennimore. Listed (at right) are the 31 members school districts which take part in Regional competition. Parochial Schools and home school students participate in Regional competition.
The four winners crowned at the CESA 3 Regional Spelling Bee are then eligible to participate in the Wisconsin State Bee (two alternates are also eligible, in case a winner is unable to participate). The Regionals are usually held in late January or early February, with the Wisconsin State Bee scheduled in March. The champions of the Wisconsin State Bee advance to the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee near Washington, D.C.
